One of the smallest communities in Napa Valley, Oakville is tiny enclave with a population of just over 70 residents. It is coveted for its extremely limited real estate, privacy and world-acclaim surrounding vineyards and wineries. Formally declared a distinct appellation within the Napa Valley AVA in 1993, the Oakville AVA produces outstanding Bordeaux varietals, most notably Cabernet Sauvignon. As a result, just about all of the Oakville area and its local economy are dedicated to the wine industry. The first vineyard was planted back in 1868 by H.W. Crabb who saw the potential of the fertile area close to the nearby Napa River. He established the To Kalon vineyard, which today produces some of the best and most coveted grapes in the Napa Valley. The present vineyard is owned by the Robert Mondavi Winery and grape grower Andy Beckstoffer. The Oakville AVA is currently home to two dozen wineries and over 5,000 acres of vineyard that all lie within the boundaries of the Oakville AVA.
